Bank Debit Payments

Some payment methods, such as ACH Direct Debit and other bank debits, don’t confirm right away. The buyer finishes on the payment page, but the bank can take a few business days to say whether the money actually moved. MakerVera waits for that answer: a purchase paid this way is completed only once the payment succeeds, and never if it fails.

Card payments are not affected. They complete as quickly as always.

  • Members and visitors who pay by bank debit and want to know what happens next
  • Administrators who see a purchase arrive days after the buyer paid, or a buyer asking why their order never appeared

Every purchase made through your makerspace’s checkout follows the same rule when it is paid by bank debit:

PurchaseCompleted when the payment clears
Store ordersThe order is created and fulfilled
Event, class and workshop registrationsThe registration is confirmed
Gift cardsThe code is generated and emailed to the recipient
Day passes and membershipsThe pass or membership starts
Donations (one-time and recurring)The donation is recorded
Product subscriptionsThe subscription starts

After you finish on the payment page, you come back to your makerspace’s site. Your purchase isn’t complete yet:

  • The page you return to thanks you or says your payment is still processing. Either way, you can close the tab.
  • The order, registration, pass or membership appears only once your bank confirms the payment. That usually takes a few business days.
  • When it clears, you get the same confirmation email you would get after a card payment.

Anything set aside for you stays set aside while you wait:

  • Gift card balance. If you applied a gift card and paid the rest by bank debit, the gift card amount stays on hold until the bank answers. It isn’t released after 10 minutes the way an unfinished card payment is.
  • A place in a membership plan. If the plan has a member limit, your place stays reserved while the payment clears.

While a membership or pass payment is still clearing, you can’t start another membership or pass checkout at the same makerspace. Checkout shows “Your earlier membership or pass payment is still being confirmed” and nothing is charged. Wait for the confirmation or failure email, then try again if you need to.

If you already have a membership by the time a bank payment for a new one clears (for example, you also paid by card in the meantime), you are not given a second membership. The bank payment is refunded to your original payment method, and you get an email saying you already had a membership.

If your bank rejects the debit:

  • You receive an email: “Your payment to [makerspace] didn’t go through”. It names the amount and the item.
  • Nothing is delivered and nothing is charged. No order, registration, pass, membership or gift card is created, and nothing is left set up to renew.
  • Any gift card amount held for that checkout is released, so the full balance is available again.
  • You can try again from your makerspace’s page, using another payment method if you prefer.
  • Purchases arrive late. A bank-debit purchase shows up in your orders, registrations, memberships and reports on the day the payment clears, not the day the buyer checked out. Capacity, stock and seat counts change at that point too.
  • Failed debits leave nothing to clean up. A purchase whose payment failed never becomes an order, so there is nothing to cancel or refund. The buyer has already been emailed.
  • Duplicate memberships are refunded for you. If a member’s bank payment for a membership clears while they already hold one, the new subscription is cancelled automatically and the payment is refunded from your makerspace’s payment account to the member’s original payment method. The member is emailed, and your billing admins receive an alert.
  • You can’t speed it up. The timing is set by the buyer’s bank. If a member asks where their purchase is, ask them to watch for the confirmation or failure email.

Why did checkout say a gift card can’t be combined with a card payment?

Section titled “Why did checkout say a gift card can’t be combined with a card payment?”

Paying part of an order with a gift card and the rest by card needs a payment provider that can split the payment. If your makerspace’s payment provider can’t, checkout says so before anything is charged or held. Use a gift card that covers the full amount, or pay the whole order without the gift card. Makerspaces that take payments through Stripe don’t see this message.

I paid but don’t see my order. What happened?

Section titled “I paid but don’t see my order. What happened?”

If you paid by bank debit, your bank is probably still confirming the payment. Your order appears once it is confirmed, and you get a confirmation email. If the payment fails, you get an email saying it didn’t go through, and nothing is delivered.
